Hi Nikki,
I've been meaning to write sooner to let you know I'm proud of you and your work up there in Greenland. I've been reading your journals etc.
I also was in Greenland in the early 60's on an island called Kulusuk. It was a defense job on the DEW line. I have no idea if the place still exists.
It's location is far south of you at 65.555N 37.148W.
Because Kulusuk is on the eastern coast line and near the gulf stream, the temperature was mild but the wind would get up to 100 knots at times. All in all, I look back now and consider it a good experience and I'm sure you will also.
It's great you are documenting your stay with pictures and the like for later years to look back on.
Stay warm,
Cousin Jerry in Oregon USA |

Hi! Nice to hear from you. Kanger, the city I flew into was also part of the DEW line. You can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that that was a series of radar detectors that the United States set up during the cold war. There is also another one of these areas at another place in Greenland called Raven Camp. This is a temporary camp set up when the National Guard needs to train pilots for flying in Arctic and Antarctic regions.
This experience has been amazing. I have learned so much, it is incredible. I am very lucky that they have so much accessibilty to technology so that I can create a pretty detailed record of my experiences.
This is a picture of the remains of the air force base radar station left over from the DEW line. |
