Misty Nikula-Ohlsen Studies CO2 Flux in Northern Alaska
25 June - 28 July 2004
Download a press announcement for Misty's project in PDF format. (389 K - PDF)
Join teacher Misty Nikula-Ohlsen as she helps investigate a critical question in the climate change puzzle – is the Arctic a
source or sink of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2)? Misty will be working with Hyojung Kwon, Walter Oechel, and other members
of the research team from the Global Change Research Group at San Diego State University to measure CO2 dynamics in Arctic
tundra ecosystems around Barrow and other sites in northern Alaska.
Misty teaches middle school math and science at Whatcom Day Academy in Bellingham, Washington. A former chemical engineer,
Misty is looking forward to linking classroom instruction to the adapting and changing world of science. Through participation
in TREC, Misty will have the opportunity to make a contribution to the body of scientific knowledge and to provide a direct link
from the realm of real science to the classroom.
