Kathleen Wright Studies Macroinvertebrates in Alaska Streams
28 June - 7 July 2004
Join teacher Kathleen Wright as she
travels close to home for her TREC adventure at Caribou-Poker
Creeks Research Watershed north of Fairbanks, Alaska. Kathleen will work with Dr. Carlos Pinkham from the Biology Department at Norwich University in Vermont and other researchers to survey
macroinvertebrates in the relatively pristine
watershed, which is reserved for ecological, hydrological, and climatic research. The research project will provide baseline
information to analyze changes resulting from human impacts.
Kathleen teaches 4th grade at Woodriver Elementary in Fairbanks, Alaska. Kathleen has participated in biological fieldwork
throughout Alaska and engages her students in place-based science by emphasizing Alaska and the arctic environment in her
classroom. Kathleen believes that "by making connections to the world outside the classroom…we provide bridges that link
classrooms to the world."
