Project Armada (http://www.armadaproject.org) currently is supporting teacher, Stephen Schmidt,
on the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy. To learn more about his experience, click

"Shipboard Reports" for the "Daily Teachers Journal".
Patty Cie has returned home from the Healy Icebreaker. Read her journal entries here.
Patty was aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy as part of a collaboration between
TREC and a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Teachers (RET) project at the University of Texas
Marine Science Institute. Patty lived and worked on the ship alongside scientists from all over the world
collecting marine samples for later analysis in the United States.
Patty teaches 8th grade integrated science at Yelm Middle School in Yelm, Washington, and will be participating in
an intensive 6-week research cruise. Patty and the research team will be collecting samples in order to assess the
possible effects of climate change on the delicate ecosystems along the Arctic coast. Much of the cruise will be
spent breaking through various levels of fast ice (ice anchored to the coast) giving Patty plenty of opportunity
to observe migrating whales, walrus, and birds as well as scavenging polar bears.
