Wow, it is really happening!!! In two days I will begin the adventure of a lifetime, not that it hasn't already been an adventure. The preparations for this trip have gone so smoothly, and so quickly. I have enjoyed every minute of it.
Since the last time I wrote, lots of things have been happening. For example, the word has gotten out about the project. I have been interviewed by two newspapers, one tv station, and one radio station. The tv station interviewed two students as well, and the newspaper came to take pictures of my students as well. All of this has taken a lot of time, and I was really nervous before I did it. As each of these interviews took place, I was surprised at how easy it was to do. It just seemed so natural, and it was even surprisingly kind of fun to do.
My students have gotten a good start on their first journal entry, and they look great. Some seem to be having a good time doing this project. I was truly impressed with the variety of questions my students came up with based on the first section of journals that we looked at. They will be working on one more tomorrow before I leave, and then three more while I am gone. Each time they do this they will generate new questions to share with the researchers.
Speaking of those questions, that leads to what was probably the highlight of the last two weeks. We recieved a set of polycom speakerphones (thanks, Vision Net http://website.montanavision.net/vnet/ ) so that we can call Summit and talk live. They were installed this week, which was exciting, because we could do a trial run before I leave. Today we called and spoke to several of the researchers, and the kids asked those questions they generated. It was fun to hear them and interact with them. It was great. I am definitely leaving on a high note, as I got lots of positive feedback from the kids after the phone call. Thanks, Summit, we had a great time!!! The kids are looking forward to next week's call.
Well, I guess I better go get some packing done.
Greenland or bust!!!
