Amy,
On page four of your pictures, you have a picture of cows laying down. Are they holsteins? Do you know if they do any thing differently on the farms than what we do in Vermont?

Great question. I thought it was interesting to find cows here too. Although the cows are used to get milk, I don't think they are holsteins because they don't look like holsteins, but I am not a cow expert, so I don't know for sure. I can tell you one thing that they do a lot differently on the farms here than we do in Vermont, and that is that they don't have any fences. The cows roam around all over the village and so you see them walking along the road or hanging out by the river. That is very different than Vermont. There are also just a couple of farms here in Zhigansk that I have seen and they are much smaller than the farms in Vermont. I would say that each of the farms has less than 10 cows each. They do also have some chickens and pigs too though. The barns look a little different too. Here is a picture of what the barn looks like at the farm that is right by our lodge where we are staying.
