Why was Toolik Lake chosen as the site for research?

Toolik Lake was chosen because it is a relatively deep kettle lake (60 feet)
and can support fish over winter. It has rainbow trout, grayling and slimy sculpin. The early researchers along the haul road were looking for such a place as this.
