| Why did you choose to go on the jouney?

On the trip are you trying to identify animals on shore or the ice?

| 1. First, I wanted to share with my students that it is possible to do
whatever you want to do. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to go to
the arctic. When I read about the opportunity available for a teacher
to join the SBI 04 cruise, I went for it. Now my dream is reality. I
also wanted to gain new experiences and knowledge to share with my
students. As a student you know that it is much easier to understand a
concept from someone with experience than just from a textbook.

 2. Even though the pictures may look like land (because of the snow and ice
cover), we are far from any shoreline. There are animals like polar
bears that live on the ice and seals that haul out onto the ice.
Anytime a marine mammal is spotted, a report is made. However, for the
SBI cruise, it is the animals living in the water column (pelagic
species) and on/in the seafloor (benthic species) that are being
 collected, identified and studied.
