1.) Make a chunk of ice like the ice on the Lena River that we saw today, May 30, 2004 by freezing water in a disposable aluminum bread pan or milk cartons. Freeze several of these “ice chunks”. Remove the ice from the cartons and push one of the ice chunks with one of the other ice chunks against a pile of sand. What happened?
2.) Figure out how much of the volume of the ice chunks we saw today were below the water line. Make your “ice chunks” by freezing water in a milk carton. Place the ice cube in a clear container of cool water. Answer the question by measuring the dimensions (length, width, and height) of the ice above the water and below the water.
3.) Figure out if an ice chunk that is twice the size of another ice chunk will take twice as long to melt. Make two icebergs, one with twice the volume of the other, by freezing water in a pint and quart milk carton. Place the ice cubes in a clear container of cool water and record melting times.
