i always thought of microwaves as the thing you make popcorn with i didn't know they were really waves. what are they and how do they work?

Microwaves are part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Light that helps us see everything is part of the spectrum too, and so are x-rays and infrared and radio waves and more. So microwaves aren't just the cooking machines, they are also a form of energy (that is used in the cooking machines.)
