Dear Susan,

We are students from Port Aransas Mckeevers 4th grade class. Not to make you feel bad but it is 78 degrees here and feels like 83.It is supposed to get to 92 by this afternoon.

How many pictures have you taken? What temperature is it there? What temperature is the water?

Hi Meagan, Taylor, and Tony!

Thanks so much for writing to me.

Answer:
I have two cameras along with me. One is a digital still camera and the
other is a digital movie camera. I've taken some still photos but have
been mostly taking movies. We had a polar bear visit near our ship last
night and I got some great footage of him walking on the ice floes and
checking us out. He even stood up on his hind legs and waved his right
paw.

Answer:
The air temperature has been about 30 degrees F. We walk around outside
for brief times in tennis shoes, jeans and a fleece but when we are
deploying equipment off the stern and have to be outside for an hour or
two we wear big orange suits called Mustang suits. They are very warm
and float if you happened to go overboard. We also have to wear hard
hats and steel toed boots to work around the equipment.

Answer:
The water temperature is slightly colder than freezing. Pure water
freezes at is 32 degrees F. The salt in seawater depresses the freezing
point so it can be 30 degrees F and still liquid.
