Hi Courtney,
As arctic river discharge increases, more freshwater enters the Arctic Ocean. This makes the Arctic Ocean fresher (lower concentration of salt). Water in the Arctic Ocean eventually enters the Atlantic Ocean near Greenland. And the North Atlantic Ocean near Greenland is a very important location for controlling global ocean circulation. If enough extra freshwater enters the North Atlantic Ocean, the "Conveyor" ocean circulation could stop because the fresher water would not be dense enough to sink. And if this happens, the climate of the North Atlantic region would cool because the warm surface ocean currents from the tropics would no longer go as far north.
