How are the plants there, different from the plants here?

Here at Toolik Lake there are no trees. All the plants grow on permafrost so their "roots" can't go very deep.
Many of them are non-vascular which means they don't have tubes to carry water up so they're very low growing.
The growing season is very short. Some of them are flowering now, even though there is still ice covering most of the lake. By mid-August winter starts to settle in so they have to be very hearty!
