how does collecting water samples from russia provide clues for feedback to global climate?

That's a great question. There are 2 broad classes of information we'll get from the water samples were collecting from the downstream reaches of the 6 largest arctic rivers (in addition to the Lena River, we're also working on the Yenisey, Ob', and Kolyma rivers in Russia and the Yukon and Mackenzie rivers in North America). First, we're interested in measuring chemicals in the river water that can be used to "trace" the water as it circulates and mixes in the Arctic Ocean. We need to better understand Arctic Ocean circulation patterns and exchanges with the North Atlantic in order to better predict how changes in river discharge may impact ocean circulation and consequently climate. Secondly, the concentrations and fluxes of chemicals in a river tell us something about processes occurring in its watershed - and changes over time give us clues about changes occurring in the watershed (which might be related to global warming).
