Hi Jan and Class:
We haven't really seen much wildlife on this trip. When I've been to Alaska I've seen much more wildlife - and I'm not really sure what the difference is. Maybe it is because the whole time we've been here we've been in the village of Zhigansk, so we haven't been out into the woods much. We've heard that there are wolves and bears and moose (and of course reindeer) nearby, but we haven't been lucky enough to see them. There are polar bears in the Russian Arctic, but they are generally closer to the Arctic Ocean than we are. Yesterday we saw some interesting birds that were really well camouflaged. Go to the "Activities and Experiments" section (lesson called "Adaptations") to learn more about how arctic animals adapt to their harsh environments.
We're really excited to get out on the water on our sampling boat this Saturday (we hope, that is - the ice has to clear out more first). Thanks for the question.
