The same reason that whales do not freeze to death. I am not a mammal
expert but I do know that walrus have an enormous layer of blubber
coating their bodies to seal in their own body heat. In Nome, they had
many types of apparel made from walrus blubber. It is really thick and
is excellent insulation. Try an experiment (or get somebody else to try
it), get a small plastic bag (ziplock bag) and fill it with Crisco or
some other form of lard. Now prepare a container of ice water large
enough to stick your hand into. First, put your hand in the ice water
to get adapted to the cold water. Now, put your hand in the lard filled
bag and submerge it into the water. I bet other than the gross greasy
feeling of the lard you will not feel cold at all, the same principle
works with blubber skin around the walrus.
