Craig:

The students in Port Aransas, Texas have been studying contrasts in environments and impacts of changes on our island community. We are interested in basic data such as minutes of daylight and temperatures from which the students can make graphs as they study the contrasting environments and the impacts of global climate trends. We would also like to see some photos of the USCGC HEALY.

Best wishes for a safe vayage.

Hey Lief,

How are you doing? I am doing fine on the Healy and would be happy to
answer any questions you or the students may have about the arctic or
the ship. Right now we a chugging along at a snail's pace. The ice
sheet is dense and we have had to repeatedly stop, back up, and hit the
ice pack full bore to break through. As for the hours/minutes of
daylight, I cannot give you any exact numbers. I am sure you could find
exact numbers on NOAAs website (try the weather station at Nome or
Barrow). I can tell you that since I got on the ship I have yet to see
darkness (I do sleep on the night shift though). The other day I was up
to 4 AM assisting Susan with some benthic cores on the back deck and the
darkest it ever got was a shade of dusk (much like Port A around 6:30-7
PM). As for pics of the ship, you can find good ones of the Healy by
searching USCGC Healy.

Patty Cie, the teacher with us, has also taken
some great pics of the Healy and daily teacher's journals which can be viewed HERE.

Hope all is going well in Port Aransas and that the mosquitoes are not
too bad.

Craig

Thanks for the photo links. We surveyed the picture gallery during economics class this morning. We discussed how climate and natural resources impact the local economies and what implications changing conditions might have.

The students have posted a few questions.

Thanks,
-Leif
