Dear Max,

What kind of animals live in the Arctic?

What do people eat in the Arctic?

What do people and animals sleep on?

What do people who live in the Arctic do?

What do children do to play in the Arctic?

Sincerely,
Ellen and Nicole Nickle

Hi Ellen and Nicole,

Wow, these are lots of good questions! I'll try to answer some of them here. And you can also look at Amy's "Teacher's Journal" (the QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS topic" where I answered some similar questions.

There are lots of fascinating animals in the Arctic including polar bears, seals, whales, eagles, musk ox, foxes, cariboo, moose, wolves, and many kinds of fish. I have seen all of these animals in the Arctic except wolves (hopefully some day I'll see a wolf!).

People eat all kinds of things in the Arctic. In many places it is possible to buy the same kinds of food that you probably eat. But in more remote places, people eat traditional foods. Many of these traditional foods are on the list of animals above (things like cariboo, whales, seals, musk ox, and fish). When we are on the Lena River this summer, we will probably eat some cariboo as well as lots of fish.

People who live in the Arctic do all kinds of things. In Siberia this summer, we will meet many different kinds of people including school teachers, fisherman, boat captains, cooks, miners, and students. And these people will have different ancestories: some will belong to the group of people called Sakha (or Yakut), some will be Nenet, and some will be Even or Evek. That is one thing that is very interesting about the Arctic: lots of fascinating differnent groups of people.

Hmmm, what do children play in the Arctic? We will watch closely this summer so that we can answer your question better later, but in general, I think kids everywhere like the same kinds of activities. But I guess the kids in Zhigansk where we will be spend most of their time outside playing in the summer, and most probably don't have video games and things like that.

Max
