It appears that by the end of the week the connections will be established. Sandra and the team have amazing pictures to share. They have visited the Kappe Linne Glacier, a 30 km (as the bird flies) trek, but of course they were hardly going in a straight line. It was up and down and crossing glaciel streams and great boulders! In all, the journey turned into a 14 hour day hike, but was well worth the efforts. The team was able to collect data at sites along the glacier that were established last year.
Everyone is safe and healthy and hope that you can enjoy the pictures very soon! please send questions that the team can answer as soon as connections are established.
The participants are establishing their research projects which include studying the sedimentation of the lake, the movement of the glacier, storm surge on a coastal lake, water sampling, and the meteorological effects in various areas. Some guest professors from UNIS have been presenting their research regarding the formation and growth of ice wedges and the significance of the permafrost.
The weather has been quite variable with a wonderful warm day for the glacier hike and several cold and rainy, windy days for lake work. The area has been surrounded by sea ice for days, making it impossible for supplies to come in. Ships are stranded just beyond the cape, but though supplies are short and the participants are longing for milk and eggs, there is plenty of food (if you like fish!) and no one is going hungry!
It is hoped that the posts can be regular, starting on Friday July 30. |
