What are you going to do in barrow besides studying CO2 flux?
Will you meet eskimos (maybe)?

What(in general) is up? Surprised[/b]

Well, "Joe" (aka Jackson)
Thanks for the interest in my trip! This is what I know so far:
1. Mostly I will be taking a lot of measurements. I was told that they require about 2-3 hours to take and are quite "physically vigorous". So I guess I won't have to worry about missing my workouts!
2. In my "spare time" I plan to explore Barrow (I know that there is an excellent Heritage Museum there), post my journals and pictures, take weather measurements and document my bird sightings. Smile
3. I am CERTAIN that I am going to meet some "Eskimos". The native population of Barrow is the Inupiak. Currently I am reading a really good book called "The Whale and the Supercomputer" that tells about the people in Barrow and how they have built a community knowledge about the climate in and around Barrow. Then is compares this to how scientists have gone about learning and verifying the same information. I hope that I can learn more about the Inupiak while I am there.
4. I also hope to see wildlife. Particularly, polar bears, arctic foxes and birds (though mostly from far away).
I am sure that I will be very busy and since it is "daytime" all the time, there will be a lot of "time" to do things! Smile I hope that you will follow my exploits online this summer!

Hi there,
It sounds like you are embarking on quite an experience this summer. I am also a middle school teacher for math and wondered if any of your measurements would be applicable to a pre-algebra class? I am interested in integrating real life situations into the math curriculum.

I am sure that many of my measurements would be applicable to your class, but it would also depend on what you are wanting to do. I will not only be taking measurements as part of the larger research that I am involved with (I am not sure, yet, how much of that may be available to a wider audience), but I also plan to take cloud cover and type, barometric pressure, temperature, humidity and precipitation measurements for my class to interact with when I return. Mostly, I will have them make predictions about how the measurements may be correlated and then have them do some graphing or othr analysis to see if they can answer their questions. You are more than welcome to use the data that I generate in your own classroom and if there is something else that you would like me to do that is feasibly possible, I will see what I can do.
