Hi Mrs. Bejin... Ms. Hansen here. Thanks so much for writing to the kids, they love hearing from you. I know a lot of their questions will probably be answered in your presentation We finally will get to watch it tomorrow.
I have some questions of my own for you. I've been looking at the pictures of the coltsfoot and other plant life you've sent, how long does the typical growing season last there? The flowers must be very resiliant to be able to grow in cooler conditions.
With the 24-hour daylight in the summer is it difficult to sleep? Does the tundra experience a drop in temperature as we do during the evenings?
During our video conferencing your students modeled all of the cold weather clothing you were bringing with you. Is it as cold there as you were anticipating? What are the typical temperatures for the summer in the tundra and how do this year's temperatures compare? If they are warmer than usual is that what is contributing to the deepening of the active layer of the tundra or are there other factors?
How many other people (research groups) are up there? Are they studying things similar to you? Also, in your attempt to get a core sample from a tussock, what can you learn from that?
Lots of questions but if anyone is smart enough to know the answers it would probably be you!!! Thanks and continue to enjoy your time up there and learn a lot!
Ms. Hansen
