how bad are the mosquitos in barrow

The mosquitoes around Barrow itself are not too bad. Usually, when we are in town, we don't see or hear but one or two. In the tundra areas around Barrow, depending on the weather, they can be much worse. When the weather gets warm and it is not very windy, then the mosquitoes come out in swarms. Typically, I just used a bit of Off! spray and they didn't bother me too much. Other people were not so lucky.

The further you get out on the tundra, the worse the mosquitoes.
In Atqasuk, the mosquitoes are always bad when it is warm and calm winds. There you need not only bug spray, but also a bug shirt or bug hat to keep them away from you. When you are wearing a bug hat, it is strange because you can hear the whine of the mosquitoes, but you just have to be calm and not let them bother you because they can't bite you.

Anytime you are on the tundra and not properly bug sprayed or netted, the mosquitoes are VERY annoying. There are just so many of them and they are so large!
