Journal: Day 2: Biology Lab, University of Alaska at Fairbanks 7:00 am 5/28/04
I woke up before my alarm this morning. Carl said that we’d meet at the University at 7:00 but I awoke at 5:30 anxious to begin. I also awoke to a houseful of smoke. Yesterday the winds shifted and Fairbanks is blanketed with smoke from wildfires burning to the North. This is worse than I’ve seen it in previous years. A check with the state patrol on highway conditions indicates that the roads are still open 30 miles up the Steese so I pack my backpack and head to the University to meet Carl and Casey. We are labeling sample jars when our permit escort from Fish and Game arrives. He lets us know that the fire is about 10 miles from our sample site and smoke will be getting worse as we head North. Carl makes the decision to postpone the field work after checking conditions and sets a new tentative field date of Wednesday.
