fireweed gets it's name because it will often thrive in disturbed areas like recent burn sites or roadsides.
Andromeda is a beautiful flowering evergreen common in the arctic tundra.

Ledum is a flowering evergreen that, along with Eriophorum, blankets the tundra with its snowy white inflorescences.

Permafrost depth varies with factors such as what compass direction the slope is facing, the type of vegetation overlaying it, and of course, time of year. This mid-June the range is from 3cm to 30cm below ground.
Resin bags are either cations or anions, and are planted about 5-8cm into the soil to detect nitrogen passing through the soil.
