Day 1
Tom Grenfell setting up albedometer. |
Day 1
Don Perovich preparing equipment prior to going out on the ice. |
Day 1
Don and Tom on an Albedo transect. |
Day 1
Tom with a backpack infrared spectrometer. |
Day 2
This is Hajo and Andy drilling an ice core right before the
audio conference. Hajo brought the core into the audio conference
with him, so it had started to melt by the time the conference
had ended. |
Day 2
This is Hajo and Andy scouting out the ice for a good place
to take a core. Notice the pressure ridgers in both of these
photos. |
Day 2
Andy is pointing to the brownish bottom of the ice core, where
all of the algae grow, which the zooplankton(little shrimp)
eat, which the fish eat, which the seals eat, which finally
the Polar bears eat. What kind of chain is that? |
Day 2
Andy drilling a depth core off the sled, by hand! He must have
some big muscle underneath all that heavy winter clothing. |
Day 2
Patrick holding the ice core driller. |
Day 2
Andy looks pretty small standing next to this pressure ridge!
I can't remember who asked about the blocks sliding off the
top of the pressure ridges, but I think you would be interested
to know that when your standing right next to one of this size
it is pretty scary! |
Day 3
Craig George is standing on the left in the pink shirt, Richard
Glenn is standing on the right, Harry Brower is sitting in the
front.
|
Behind the Scenes
Here is a look at some of the fancy equipment being employed
to bring all the teachers the audio conferences each day. |
Day 3
This is the view looking north over the ocean today. |
Day 3
Winter gear in the BASC warehouse for scientists to wear. |
Day 4
Thin sections at low magnification (width 50mm) and large magnification
under the microscope. |
Day 4
Intra crystaline brine pores. |
Day 4
Diatom with slime stained blue and slime in brine pore. |
Day 4
This is Hajo without all his winter gear on. |
Day 4
This is the building the Geophysical Institute is located in
at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. |
