Ms. Cie~
WOW...i've just read your journals , like all of them. they wake you up at odd times..like 2:00am! oh i'd be so crabby! you seem to be busy every secong of the day. how do you ever get the time to write those journals? do you carry a portable lap top with you were ever you go? i'd be soo exausted if i were you! but i hope your enjoying your self! wow! so hows the weather chilly? BRrrr...just thinking about it and i get goose bumps. so i notice your doing alot of research on plankton, how do you research it when you cant even see it? do you use a microscope of something? oh i was also wondering what are copepods? you seem to talk alot about them and i have on clue what they are! So have you been on an ice burge yet? how exciting! i'd love to do that one day...if is was like 100 times warmer! soo what kind of wildlife is out there? i mean yeh i know polar bears and walrus's but is there anything else? like umm this may be wrong but arent there penguins out there? Or is that the antartic? well i don't know i was just wondering. So you have been taking samples from the ocean floor any unexpected thing down there that you didnt think would be there? i don't know how anything could survive in that freezing cold water. is it possible for a person to swim in that water if they have a wetsuit of something? well i better go, bye bye! write back!

Hi Kim,
I am glad you are enjoying the journals. As for waking me up, well, it is more like I don't go to bed. For instance, I woke up at 8:30 AM June 1st and went to bed 9:30 AM June 3rd, (today). I slept for until 11:45 AM and depending on what is happening, I won't go to sleep until after midnight tonight. There is a lot to do and sometimes the most interesting things happen in the wee morning hours - like polar bears.
I work in my assigned office space (3 feet of plywood counter and a stool) when I write journal entries, but I carry a camera and a notebook just about everywhere I go to document, document, document.
As for copepods, they are small animals that float with the ocean current as part of the zooplankton. You can see some species with the naked eye, but it is easier to see them using a dissecting microscope. Check out the picture I posted in an earlier journal entry.
Penguins only live in the southern hemisphere, but alcids live in the northern hemisphere. They can swim like penguins AND fly in the air. Check out puffins on the net and let me know if you agree that they are "way cool".
Things survive here because they evolved to live in this climate. In the arctic, blubber is a good thing. It keeps the animals warm and provides nourishment between meals.
I have heard that humans can only survive in Arctic Ocean for about 5 minutes give or take. If people want to swim here, they wear a dry-suit to insulate themselves against the cold. Events like the polar plunge has risks and only last a few seconds.
Thanks for writing. I hope to talk to you during the teleconference.
