Quote:

We found clams, anenome and several types of worms.

How long did it take to learn how to use the door?

It was easy to learn - one try did it. Smile

Quote:
What is a nautical mile?

A nautical mile is a measurement of distance that is used
internationally. One nautical mile is is the average length of one
minute of arc on the great cirlcle of the earth which is 6067 ft. How
long is the mile we use when measuring distance traveled by automobile?

Quote:
How did the walruses react to having their picture taken?

We were far enough away that most of the walruses did not react to our
passing. One group went into the water, but I am not sure why they went
into the water.

How is the Healy able to go through the ice without breaking?

The Healy has a steel hull and is designed to break ice. It does
require maintanence to stay in excellent working condition, but that is
not a problem as the Healy has an outstanding crew who keep the ship in
top shape.

What was the most severe injury treated at sick bay?

Good question. I will have to ask the medical officer. I will let you
know when I find the answer.

Quote:
How big are walruses?

Adult walruses are around 3 m in length and can weigh anywhere from 1800
to 3700 pounds.

Quote:
5/22 part 1: Why do they call it terrestrial plants?

The word terrestrial refers to land. Therefore, plants that live around
a river are called terrestrial plants because they live on land instead
of in the water. Plants that live in the water are called aquatic
plants.

Quote:
What is it like flying in a helicopter?

It was really fun. I like doing the sharp sideways turns.

Quote:
How do you know all the different types of species?

I am learning a few from the experts on the ship. When scientists are
not sure which species they have collect, they use books and resource
materials to make the identification.

Quote:
What does the temperature have to be to make the ice that thick?

At are below freezing for a very long time.

Quote:
Why does there need to be a good ice flow?

One of the science teams drills ice cores. They are off loaded from the
ship onto the ice, therefore there must be a good ice floe for the group
to work.

Quote:
Is it scary breaking through all the ice?

The ship make wonderful and strange sounds. I think ice breaking
exciting.

Quote:
Are you doing lab tests when the polar bears are seen?

There are lab test happening 24/7 so someone is doing a lab test when a
polar bear is spotted.

Quote:
What is a winch and where is it located?

A winch is a machine used to pull heavy objects. The winch used to put
equipment in the water from the stern working deck is located in the
back of the ship above the working deck.

Quote:
How long did it take to go up and down the ship?

I wondered around a few floors so it I think it took me about 15
minutes.

Quote:
What is the coldest temperature you have been in?

The coldest temperature that I have been outside on this cruise is
around -7 degrees C with a 30 mile per hour wind.

Quote:
Why is it called a Rosette?

It is called a rosette because the water bottles are in a circle.

Quote:
How does the Van veen work?

The vanVeen grab is cocked open and sent to the ocean floor. At the
ocean floor the release mechanism is triggered and the vanVeen "bites"
into the floor trapping a grab of benthic sediments and hopefully
animals.

Quote:
How long does the filtering last?

The length of time it takes to filter the complete set of replicate
samples depends on the productivity of the water. Think in hours not
minutes.
