When we left Nome, we traveled in open water. We encountered some ice pieces in the Bering Strait, but it moved easily. Many of the scientists commented that during the Shelf Basin Interaction (SBI) 2002 cruise the Healy had to break ice from Nome northward. The SBI 2002 cruise took place two weeks earlier than the current SBI 2004 cruise and I was under the impression that some scientists were concerned that we may have missed the peak spring sampling season. However, it appears that we have not missed the season because since we have been in the Chukchi Sea we have been met by thick, large, compressed ice floes. We are continually traveling through (and sometimes with) the ice.
One of the ice floes we moved through to reach areas of open water.
