Employing a standard Web browser, this methodology offers seamless access to multiple data bases in a distributed environment, and supports a capability for dynamic visualization, analysis, and interactivity. Data is accessed securely in its native format at server side, with no requirement for pre-formatting, transformation, or manipulation. This effectively permits users to leverage existing data sources while maintaining data integrity. Network overhead is kept to a minimum by transmitting only a compressed representation of the data, using the data servers for all access and processing. The procedure features compatibility with numerous industry-standard spatial data formats, and with OGC-compliant data servers; the former requires installation of the data server technology at each data site that is linked via a web server.
