TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Ask the Teacher (Bob) or the Scientist Team _ Working on the Glacier

Posted by: Kayla Nadel-laMotta Dec 23 2005, 02:42 PM

You stated that water was 'pouring off the glacier' as you were working on it. But then you stated that you were trying to figure out if the glacier is shrinking or expanding. If there was water pouring off the glacier, wouldn't that mean the glacier could only be shrinking? How could it be expanding if it is essentially losing ice/water?

Also, what are level loggers?

Great question Kayla,

Water melts off the glacier every summer. The question is does more ice/snow melt in the summer month as compared to what is added in the winter. Ultimately this determines if the glacier is retreating or advancing.

Level loggers were used to measure how much of the glacier was melting.
Thanks for the questions
