I am so interested in the owl that you all discovered on board! Can you tell us more about what you think it is and where it might have come from? How fun! I loved your photos of the helicopter ride - that must have been a real treat! Way to go Patty!

Hi Maggie,

So great to hear from you! Liz, the scientist from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, e-mailed the photo to several leading experts on terrestrial birds, and they confirmed our suspicion: The owl is a long-eared owl. Everyone is stumped as to how it got on the ship. Since long-eared owls are not found in this area, Liz suspects that it must have been blown off course during a bad storm. We haven't seen it around lately, so we are hoping that perhaps it flew to Russia when we were just 19 miles from Siberia.

The helicopter ride was amazing! And St. Lawrence Island is absolutely gorgeous.

Best,
Patty
