Again terrible weather traps us in camp.
My tent, my clothes, my bones – all damp!
With no work to distract my stir crazy mind
I stroll the river shore to see what I can find.
Through the mist the river rocks gleam.
A few catch my eye, or so it would seam.
These I gather and inspect with a long stare.
The most special are placed in my pocket with care.
The rounded rocks range in size and hue:
Brown, green, blue, and red – to name a few!
When the collection is complete and this trip is done
I will present the treasures to my two-year old son.
I dream about his delight with the gift.
His little fingers trough the pile he will sort and sift,
Until a funny expression furls his brow
and he belts out an enthusiastic wow!
Up from the floor he jumps with delight
and out of the room, rocks and all, he takes flight.
The now empty room fills with an eerie hush…
Then, from the bathroom comes a splash, a giggle, and a flush.
A sample of colorful rocks collected for my son during bad weather days.
