I’m very proud of these Chemistry II students. They have worked on environmental chemistry all semester long and just presented great year end projects. To those of them that are seniors I wish them luck and good times in the future.

Yesterday while I was working on a lesson for today I heard a story on NPR about a high school with a trash problem. They interviewed students at a Los Angeles high school to try to figure out why there was so much trash at their school. It came out during the course of the story that a student with the recycling club had actually been punched while trying to do recycling work. The principal said that all of L.A. had a “culture of trash,” and didn’t seem too hopeful that it would be easy to change that mindset.

Concord High School has many of the same problems as on the story. About once every 2 weeks the assistant principal who does the announcements pleads over the intercom for students to pick up their trash. A few times a year we close down certain areas to students because the buildup of trash gets so bad. When students in the recycling club that I advise made a video about recycling it was laughed at and ridiculed by many students that saw it.

The reason I connect this to global warming is that I worry about our culture’s willingness to do anything. Given our current government’s unwillingness to get involved I am disheartened when I think of what the future will hold. Citizen’s need to do more, certainly, but our government also needs to make it easy for people to help out. Let’s be a creative leader in curbing global warming rather than a country dragging our feet. I’d like to break the culture like the school in LA and at CHS and make curbing global warming something that is fun, and that makes life better, and is something that people want to do.
