Summary: The teachers and scientists got to live in an abandoned Russian Barracks which was quite an improvement. They also found that the deepest parts of the lake were only 1.5 m to 1.8 m and also that it's atleest 7,500 years old which means that there should be alot of sediments. A day after that, two bears came ten meters from the camp, both of which were scared away by a dog who everyone began calling, "Capaka" ("dog" in Russian). The next day, they slowly pushed and scraped the core sample into a sample bag. Mrs. Nikula completed her first solo excavatiom and found Kuril Lake tephra with black tephra beneath.

New knowledge: Kuril Lake tephra looks VERY different compared to other peat and layers of the ground.

Questions: What is it that causes Kuril Lake tephra look so different compared to other tephra and soil?
