I must admit, it was not the most exciting part of the archaeology. Finding things while digging is MUCH more fun! But keeping track of all of the artifacts that we are collecting so that they can be located later is extremely important. There is a thorough process of documenting the artifacts so that they are not lost - even if the actual artifact is misplaced, then there is a record of it in several places at least. In some ways, going through the artifacts and ensuring that there are records of them is satisfying because much like the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, if an artifact is just placed into a huge warehouse with no record of where or what it is, it is not very useful. So the documentation helps us to feel confident that the information will still be available, even if the artifact itself is not.
