Once you get a bird in hand it takes about 1 minute to band and take measurements on a goose. If we just band it it takes about 15 seconds to determine the sex and put a band on it.

We band snow geese to determine how long they live, if and where they are shot by hunters lets us know where they spend their winters and where they fly in the fall and spring (that's why it's good to report the band number when you shoot a banded bird). Banding also lets us know if these animals disperse to other colonies or if they came from another colony where they were banded.
