Great question. What I mean by banding geese is that we put a metal leg band on the leg of a goose. The metal band is engraved with a series of numbers that identify that goose as an individual. The USFWS oversees all bird banding and they keep all records in 1 office. This ensures that nobody puts a band with the same number on a bird. We have to apply for a permit from both the state of Alaska and the USFWS in order to band geese up here. It's a great system!
