Bernie is the Chief scientist for seismic. Seismic- Geophysics tries to find out more about the stratigraphy of the ocean floor. We have different science equipment onboard for doing seismic. Multi beam sonar, sea beam and air guns are used to send sound waves in different frequencies to the ocean floor. Depending on the frequency and energy those waves can penetrate the sediments many meter/km deep, get reflected back and refracted by the different densities of different layers of ocean floor. Microphones (Transducers) receive the signals and computer programs analyses the data and produce a 2D or 3D image of the ocean floor and the upper area of the crust. Lots of mathematics involved!
In addition we have coring and ice research onboard. The USCGC Healy is an ice breaker 420 ft long. We are 142 people onboard. The Captain is Dan Oliver. He has a lot of experience with the Arctic waters and he is an excellent leader. Best regards, Ute |
