Creating a diagram of the arctic carbon cycle

Objective: Literacy--going from the written word to a sketch of what the words represent. Science content--for students to describe the arctic carbon cycle in their own words and images.

Background: This activity is inspired by the work of Donie Bret-Harte and by my reading of the book The Whale and the Supercomputer by Charles Wohlforth.

In class I had students read pages 143-149 of Wohlforth's book. I aksed them to create a small poster of how carbon cycles in the arctic based on what they read. I also asked them to make it interesting to viewers by adding interesting points both from the Wohlforth section and by looking online for information about the carbon cycle.

This type of activity used to be a good review for our students before they took the state test that is administered to all sophomores. But they don't test science in New Hampshire any more sad.gif

How does the lack of vegetation in the artic circle affect the carbon cycle?

Does the water temperature affect the release of carbon into the air?
