How does the Green House Effect work?

I'm glad you're thinking about what we are talking about in class!
The greenhouse effect is the natural phenomena that has allowed our planet to be warm enough for us to live here. Gases in the atmosphere block the solar radiation from escaping back out to space. This gaseous layer acts like the glass or plastic roof on a greenhouse keeping more radiation in our atmosphere and warming our planet.
The increase in the levels of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide and methane, have probably led to the increase in global temperatures. All of the variables in this recent change in climates are not known, but many scientists agree that human use of fossil fuels has contributed to this effect.
So, these research projects that you have been reading about are investigating the effects of this global climate change on the Arctic environment. It is not always easy to tease apart the data to find answers to their questions, but many scientists are trying to just that in many different ways.
