Hi Sadie, Sarah, Nicole, Jesse, and Angie,
I have been very busy on my trip so far. I have watched the ship break through the ice when it encountered it for the first time yesterday. I also saw several seals on the ice. Others onboard have seen walrus, bearded seals, ribbon seals, murres (a type of bird), gulls, and spectacled eiders (a sea duck). Liz, a scientist who works for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, was very excited to spot a rare bird called McKay's bunting. Today, we took samples of the sediment (mud) from the floor of the Bering Sea. We also trawled for fish and other animals using a large net. We've been busy so far! Thanks for writing, Patty |
