Hi Lesley,

We only saw that one "candle ice" event! That's the first time I've ever seen it, and I hope not the last!

I have seen candle ice in the aufeis on an arctic river. The aufeis is the sheet of ice that covers rivers in the arctic. As the rivers begin flowing in the spring, sometimes they end up flowing under these sheets of ice, called aufeis. As the aufeis melts, it breaks up into these 'candle' size chunks of ice also. The aufeis sheets may move like the one we saw on the lake. I'm not sure!
