The scientist that I worked with decided to study the vegetation at Toolik for several reasons;
1. Toolik is a research base camp so it affords a place for the researchers to stay. It is also protected land so experiments that go on for many years won't be disturbed.
2. The conditions at Toolik are similar to other areas in the northern tundra so it is important to have a record of what happens there.
3. Studying what happens in the arctic can be a good indicator of what will happen in other parts of the world as the climate changes.

Let me know if I can answer anything else for you,'
