Hi Jarid,
No, I had never caught a wild goose before, dead or alive! Snow geese are between 4 and 7 pounds, so a medium-sized goose. And, the foods that snow geese prefer are grasses and sedges, including water sedge and cottongrass, found in marshy areas. They eat the roots, pulling them up with their beaks in the spring and later in the summer eating the tender new shoots. During the winters, they used to head for the salt marshes along the Gulf of Mexico. However, many have been stopping to feed on the agricultural fields that have increased along their migration route over the past 30-50 years. Scientists think that this extra food supply is one factor that has led to their dramatic increase in population, especially in eastern Canada. Ms Pierce |
