Hi Crum

It took some doing to get to this point but now I get to ask a question, actually two.
First, has there been any change in the types of animals in the area due to any change in temp or vegetation types? Like more sothern animals moving farther north and so on, or any changes in their habits?

Second, you said that the pipe line started out at 150 degrees and droped in temp in route. Has this had any effect on the plants or the permafrost under the pipe line? It seems that this would act as a very long radiator.

Anyway cool photos and see you when you get back.

Thanks Ron

Ron, Great to hear from you!

The migration patterns of some bird species have changed slightly and the migration of the caribou has moved to the south a bit--studies are currently under way to understand why.

The pipeline does act as a radiator for the permafrost and that is why it is elevated for about 2/3 of its route. Even where it is buried it warms the soil enough that plants green up more quickly over it than in surrounding areas. For the most part it is buried in areas where there isn't permafrost and elevated where there is. Like you were thinking if it was buried close to permafrost it would melt that ice and the subsurface would give way causing bends and breaks. The other thing that is done to protect the permafrost is the use of those cooling fins that make the ground around the base of the elevated pipeline freeze earlier than in other place.

Thanks for you question--I should be back on July 3rd. Tell Matty and Jay I said hello--they haven't been able to use their computers while I have been gone. I'm roofing from July 5th until I'm done so I'll give you a call for advice.
