The Alaskan Oil Pipeline?Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116309211 File Size: 14023 Comments: 0 / Views: 420 Description: If the Alaskan Airlines magazine flight path was reasonably close to what was shown, we should have been flying fairly close to the oil pipeline as we got closer to south-central Alaska and Valdez. This picture was taken about 58 minutes into the flight, so those familiar with the flight and pipeline might know the answer as to whether this picture shows the pipeline, or a road. What do you think it is?
Mountain IslandsUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116308741 File Size: 26777 Comments: 0 / Views: 457 Description: When I think of mountains, I think of long, linear ridges. This picture seems unusual because almost circular groups of mountains appear to pop out of the ground, giving them the appearance of being islands in a wide sea of land. What type of tectonic or other forces cause this pattern? |
Now THIS is a GlacierUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116308300 File Size: 37667 Comments: 0 / Views: 438 Description: No doubt about this one. This is definitely a glacier. Notice how it even looks like you can see it flowing. How do I know this is a glacier? How many different glacial features can you see? Compare the characteristics of this photograph with those that I wondered whether it was a lake or a glacier. How do they compare? How are they different? |
Getting TallerUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116307732 File Size: 24834 Comments: 0 / Views: 476 Description: This shows the flight approaching even higher mountains. At 50 minutes into the flight, I'm assuming this is definitely part of the Chugach Mountains, but can it still be the Alaska Range?
Cracks in the IceUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116307338 File Size: 6065 Comments: 0 / Views: 478 Description: This was a closer shot of one of the lakes (?) shown in the "I can't take it anymore" picture. The pattern of these cracks seem to indicate ice breaking up like on a lake or a river, rather than cracks due to flow of ice in a glacier. Do you agree? |
I Can't Take it An...Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116307072 File Size: 13502 Comments: 0 / Views: 3492 Description: Now this one REALLY looks like a river or glacier where two "tributaries" meet. However, it again seems to have an end, and evidence of ice movement seems to be absent, so is this just a lake? |
Perplexed AgainUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116306751 File Size: 18799 Comments: 0 / Views: 491 Description: It may be my imagination, but there seems to be at least a few houses in the valley towards the top of the picture. If so, does the frozen lake (?) ever impact them? Again, it almost seems as though this frozen feature may be a glacier, but there seems to be melting along the edges, and a lack of medial moraines and other flow characteristics of glaciers. The narrow valley indicates flow of ice or water though, so does this ice (or ice futher up the mountains) ever melt and run through this valley?
Mountains and ValleysUploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116306498 File Size: 22593 Comments: 0 / Views: 449 Description: The terrain seems to be getting even more rugged and a greater range of elevation (relief). This is about 46 minutes into the flight from Fairbanks heading south/southwest. Is this approaching the Chugach Range? |
Lake or Glacier?Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116305642 File Size: 10478 Comments: 0 / Views: 432 Description: Repeated features like the one shown towards the top of this picture had me asking the most questions trying to figure out what I was seeing. This is definitely some solid ice, and it is in kind of a valley, but it doesn't have the flow features that glaciers usually have. I think this is just a frozen lake, but what do you think?
A Lot to Be Seen in th...Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116305012 File Size: 9498 Comments: 0 / Views: 447 Description: In the center of this picture are some small, rounded lakes. I believe these are kettle lakes. What causes kettle lakes? Does this look like an area where kettle lakes would be found? |
What Formed This Lake?Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116304527 File Size: 10256 Comments: 0 / Views: 445 Description: This was a large frozen lake seen about 36 minutes into the Fairbanks-Seattle flight. It seems so unusually large and rounder compared to other near-by lakes that I'm very curious about what may have formed it. It also appears to be at a relatively high altitude, not like at the bottom of a deep valley. |
Is this a Lake?Uploaded by: Steve_Marshall On: 1116304256 File Size: 12188 Comments: 0 / Views: 382 Description: I had some definite trouble figuring out what I was seeing here. This looks like a river channel, and there's evidence of flowing water, especially towards the bottom of the picture, but there was a definite beginning and end to this body of water. Is it a lake? Is it a river that flows completely when snow melts? Is it both? This was about 36 minutes into the flight from Fairbanks to Seattle if that helps with location.
