Well, we haven't made it to the Kuril Islands, yet. We are currently on
our way across the Sea of Okhotsk from Sakhalin Island. We will be
transiting for about the next 18-24 hours. In a little bit we will have
a meeting about safety and ship operations as well as the science plan.
We have been on the boat for nearly 2 days - getting settled and waiting
for everything to be ready.

Some of the fun things that I have done include shopping at the Russian
Bazaar (you should be able to read about that in my Journal). We have
also been playing cribbage and doing a lot of reading, while we were
waiting to set off on the ship. Tomorrow, when we get to the Islands,
things will get busier.

So far, we have only seen a lot of birds, since we have been in the
city. Since we have been traveling on the ship, we have seen
guillemots, jaegars, and sea gulls. I will be sure to write about other
animals in my Journal as we see them.

Thanks for reading and writing!
