May 21, 2006 – We are off. Wow, this plane is so cool. Notice in the picture below how the wheels have little sleds attached to them. For what do you think we will use them?

How is this plane different from the commercial planes that you may have taken from the Atlanta airport? First, it is very noisy. Everyone must wear ear plugs to protect their ears. I still can hear the dull “rmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm” as I type this journal entry. When you eat food with ear plugs in your ears, the sound of chewing gets amplified in your head. “CRUNCH”, “CRUNCH”, “CRUNCH”. Fortunately, I was the only one who could hear me eating.

Second, instead of seats, we sit on cargo nets. Here is a picture of Mike in his seat. They are very jiggly. Your body jiggles back and forth for the whole trip.

Third, all the luggage is in the plane with us. There is not a separate place in the plane for it.

The flight is six hours long. Tonight we will stay in Kangerlussauq on the west coast of Greenland before going to Summit.

UPDATE: We are now in Kangerlussauq. Here is some amazing scenery that we saw one hour before we landed.

Below is a picture of where we are sleeping tonight. Do you now understand why I called this journal entry “KISS?”

We are heading to Summit tomorrow! We have to get up at 5:00 a.m. It is going to be cold. It was -30 degrees Celsius at Summit today. Yikes! Don't forget to check the photo gallery for more pictures. Good night.
