TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Ask the Scientist (Lee) _ Hello

Posted by: Bobby Ungwiluk May 28 2006, 01:43 AM

Hello Lee,
I have been busy since school was out. We have been hunting for bearded seals and walrus. biggrin.gif So far so good; we have caught three adult bearded seals and one calf and 8-10 adult walruses and four calves. We've been going southwest to get them and went northeast only once. Last year we went northeast 77.6 miles and got to 5-6 herds; one of which we were going to shoot but when we got around the ice they were in the water.
This year is a good hunt. Many boats got walruses with or without calves. One boat caught a polar bear and was measured to be 6 feet. My brother, Rodney Ungwiluk, Jr., caught two: one this year and one two years ago. Some of the people here caught one over the years. Well, I have to go. The battery on this laptop is running low. I will write again soon, if not, later. cool.gif

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for writing and congratulations on your hunting success. We are still working out here, and sailed around the east end of St. Lawrence Island last night and are down off the southeast coast of the island now. We are still planning to come to Gambell in a few days and hope to give you the chance to come aboard the ship for a few hours and help us do some sampling in Anadyr Strait. Jackie Grebmeier is planning to contact the IRA Council in Gambell to make sure this will be OK and will not interfere with any of the subsistence hunting going on.

So we will be in touch soon, and until then, best wishes

Lee Cooper
