Hi Samantha,

I am so excited about where you are and what you are doing. The
kindergarteners wanted to know how you are you doing. Harrison has a
question: We are missing you. Take care of yourself!

Hi Mrs. Watson and Class!
I am very glad to hear from you and I am delighted to answer your questions!

What have you seen?
There is so much that I have seen! I have been all over the ship and have seen all the working parts and public places on the ship as well as lots of waves, water, and ice. I have toured the Siberian Yupik village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island and have met the people that are sometimes called eskimos. I have also seen many different animals.

Emily said: Why did you go on this trip?
I chose to go on this trip because I wanted to see first-hand what the animals in the ocean look like and how scientists study them. I also wanted to see how some of the ice is melting because of pollution in the air from golbal warming. Most importantly, I want to share this information with my students.

Sylvie said: Did you see a baby seal yet?
Yes, Sylvie, I have see a baby seal sitting on the ice by itself. I learned that baby seals are ready to go off on their own after being only 2 weeks old! Could human babies do that at 2 weeks old?

Alison asked: How many animals have you seen?
I have seen so many animals, that I don't think I can name them all to count them, but I will try. Let's see if you can count the different kinds of animals I have seen. Snails that live on the sea floor called whelks and moon snails - they have pretty shells; brittle stars, basket stars, and sea stars ; 2 different kinds of clams, one with a soft shell that breaks easily; mussels; snow crabs; hermit crabs; sea strawberries - a type of soft coral; tube worms; sea worms; a few shrimp and tiny creatures that look similar to shrimp called amphipods; seals; walruses; and many different kinds of birds. My friend Patty saw 3 beluga whales, but I was not there.

Jeevan asked: How many birds have you seen?
Jeevan, that is a hard question to answer. Birds fly by the ship every day and I have not been able to count them all.

George asked: HOW ARE YOU?
Hi, George. I am so happy to be here, and most of the time I am very well, but sometimes, when the waves are big, I get sea sick. =(

Elena asked: Have you seen any sea gulls?
Hi Elena. Yes, I have seen many different kinds of gulls. Did you know there was more than one kind?

Tionna said, "I LOVE YOU!"
I love you too and thank you Tionna.

Hampton asked: How is your trip going so far?
Hi Hampton. My trip is going great so far. My favorite part so far has been the helicopter ride that I took. We keep a helicopter on the ship and the scientists use it to fly over the sea to look for and study birds, walruses, and seals. They were nice enough to let me go with them one time.

Mrs. Watson, thank you so much to you and your kindergardeners at Oakwood for writing to me with wonderful questions. I have attached one of my favorite pictures. Please visit my photo gallery on my website for more pictures that I and my friend Patty have been taking.

Please tell Dr. Bailey and Mr. Barker that I said hi from the Healy!
Thanks,
